  • Outside Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown MA is this sphinx.  At first I viewed it almost as a parody on the Egyptian original.  <br />
<br />
Having done some more research I learned that the chapel is dedicated to all those who fell in the Civil War.  The sphinx is part of that memorial.  The inscription reads <br />
"American Union Preserved<br />
African Slavery Destroyed<br />
By the Uprising of a Great People<br />
by the Blood of Fallen Heroes"<br />
It is in English on one side and Latin on the other

  • Two sphinxes on guard.  While there was plenty of color in the background, these two come across much better in black and white.  While very different from their more famous namesake in Egypt, they meet the definition of sphinxes.
