  • Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown, MA dates back to before the Civil War. While touring this beautiful park, I saw this marker. It is sad in that it commemorates the deaths of three children. I was taken by the beauty of the stone, the details that have survived for over 150 years and the message of hope and faith it projects.

  • Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown, MA. This structure is a tribute to those who fell during the Civil War.<br />
<br />
It was getting late on a somewhat overcast day. The spires and stained glass stand out beautifully against the clods as they roll by.

  • Outside Bigelow Chapel at Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown MA is this sphinx. At first I viewed it almost as a parody on the Egyptian original. <br />
<br />
Having done some more research I learned that the chapel is dedicated to all those who fell in the Civil War. The sphinx is part of that memorial. The inscription reads <br />
"American Union Preserved<br />
African Slavery Destroyed<br />
By the Uprising of a Great People<br />
by the Blood of Fallen Heroes"<br />
It is in English on one side and Latin on the other
