Black and White

162 images Created 11 Apr 2012

I admit it, I'm somewhat old school and I believe that there is a special character to a black and white image. The images in this gallery are usually shot in color and available in other galleries. I only convert images that I think will display well to black and white. Some images may also be in sepia.

• We were at the Appomattox Court House national park on a very hot September day. This gentleman was the character interpreter for the military governor immediately after the surrender. I'm scratching my head to remember the Captain's name. He did a wonderful job in character. We were advised to ask "may I capture your image" or "please strike a pose" because in the 1860s "may I take your picture" would have been taken to mean I wanted to steal something!

I decided to process this to look like it might have at the time.

• This is from one of my favorite shooting locations. I thin the black and white treatment helps to bring out the barren and cold aspects of the day
Water in Winter-BW.tif
• This is the kingston lock on the D&R canal. You can see the lock keeper's house on the right. On this snowy day, nobody was taking advantage of the picnic tables. When it gets warmer it's a nice spot for a snack.

• We were at the Tarrytown cemetery for Memorial Day. Turning around, I saw this little scene which just struck me as so appropriate for the day. I almost never include color in my black and whites but I felt this warranted the exception

• This monument is at the Tredegar Iron Works in Richmond. I love that there is a monument that includes Abraham Lincoln in the capital of the confederacy as well as the setting and message
LincolnInRichmondBW.tif
• Arthur Avenue became "Little Italy" when the original in Manhattan got squeezed out by Chinatown and turned into a tourist stop. Here one can still go to the more traditional shops and get all the great specialty items. I was never sure how the cigar store fit in, but like the statue anyway.
CigarStoreIndian.tif
• This display was outside one of the landmark stores on Arthur Avenue. Yes I took a little liberty with the angles, but I like the total effect.
CannedTomatoes.tif
• This fellow is sitting outside of the cigar store at the Arthur Avenue market enjoying a cigar. I like the black and white/sepia treatment much better than the original color version
HaveACigar.tif
• I was going "walkabout" in Tarrytown. It was a warm sunny day. I like the different characters in different positions, attitudes and activities.
MainStreet1.tif
• Another shot from going walkabout in Tarrytown. the hands just caught my attention with so many rings and bracelets
Hands.tif
• On Saturdays there is a farmers market in Patriots Park. This lady was clearly enjoying the wares she was selling. I love the eyes showing out from under that big hat.
FarmersMarekt.tif
• At the Frontier Museum in Staunton, VA, the walk starts with a wet African home. This shelf was inside with some typical artifacts. The roof is made of sticks and yes, those really are natural light beams coming in
SunbeamsInAnAfricanHouse.tif
• This is from the early stages of construction. The Tappan Zee bridge is still in operation as the supports for the new bridge are going up
BuildingTheCuomoBridge.tif
• This fellow and his folks had just finished building a magnificent castle. I really like how it renders in black and white.
BoyWithSandCastle4581BW.tif
• I like this shot. There are a lot of little detains and reflections that make it interesting.
Walking In The Surf.tif
• I like this shot. There are a lot of little detains and reflections that make it interesting. Which works better, color or black and white?

• This was pretty early. Most of the beach goers were still asleep or getting ready to occupy these chairs.
Morning on the Beach.tif
• Imagine sitting there with a cool drink and an ocean breeze. On of my mentors would give me extra credit for "the boids"!

• This wonderfully ornate fence was in front of a magnificent house in Savannah, GA. I looked at it both in color and black and white and I think this version tells so much more.
StoneFence4721BW.tif
• One of the great things about walking around Savannah is that you never know what is around the next corner. We came across a group of vintage police cars on display in front of a police station. I like the black and white treatment as that's what they would have used in 1947.

• This is one of those eclectic shops one finds when walking around Savannah. Black and white really gets to the essence.

• It was very hot when we went to Savannah. This group found a great spot in the shade by the river.

• I really love the irony of having an early steam ship being used to track the wind direction. Of course when that ship would have been built, steam power was one part of propulsion
Steamship Weather Vane.tif
• This gent was really good. We bought one of his CDs. It's been quite a while since we were in Savanna and of course I can't find the disc or remember his name. :{(

• I got a big kick out of how these two were positioned. The fellow with the newspaper is bronze, not a street performer.
A Seat in the Shade.tif
• I love doing street photography. On a hot day, I suspect he earned that sandwich.

• Another street performer outside Faneuil Hall in Boston. In this case Brent McCoy (BrentMcCoy.com) was performing and asked for a young assistant from the audience. This little girl was perfect! Here you can see her trying to catch a ball in his hard hat.
DSC_4070BWu-LR.tif
• This shot outside Faneuil Hall in Boston, was taken just after its predecessor. Brent McCoy (BrentMcCoy.com) was performing with this little girl as a volunteer assistant. She was trying to catch the ball int he hard hat and just missed it.
DSC_4072BWu-LR.tif
• Brent McCoy (Brent McCoy.com) performing outside Faneuil Hall in Boston. Notice the two "assistants" on either side of him steadying the ball he is standing on. Pay particular attention to their "headgear"! The little girl handing him the wrench is another volunteer. Brent is very talented, but the little girl made the show!

You can see this image on Brian's home page!
DSC_4103BWu-LR.tif
• As the closing to Brent McCoy's performance (BrentMcCoy.com) he told his young volunteer assistant that if she could catch the dollar bills as he released them, she could keep them. The trick is such that it is almost impossible to catch them, but he let her keep them anyway. You can see how she felt about "her pay"
DSC_4112BWu-LR.tif
• We were strolling around Faneuil Hall in Boston on a Saturday morning. Brian Stankus was performing and doing a wonderful job. He is definitely worth giving a listen (BrainStankus.com). I've shared the images I took with him.
DSC_3999BW2u-LR.tif
• One of the many snack vendors around Faneuil Hall in Boston. To me the fun thing about doing this in black and white is that if you ignore the prices, this could have been taken at almost any time in the last fifty or more years!
DSC_4007-1BWu-LR.tif
• Along Boston's Newbury Street. This gentleman is sweeping the steps up to his hat store. I thought that the hat boxes along the stairs make a very interesting accent in letting people know where the stairs lead. Of course, he is demonstrating his product the whole time.
DSC_3882BWu-LR.tif
• We were taking an early morning walk along Newbury Street in Boston. Something about the scene just caught my attention.
DSC_3894BWu-LR.tif
• Saturday morning traffic on Storrow Drive in Boston
DSC_3902BWu-LR.tif
• What is the oarsman thinking as he looks across the Charles towards Cambridge? It was a perfect autumn morning in Boston, ideal for a turn at the oars.
DSC_3907BWu-LR.tif
• A heavy traffic day for rowers on the Charles River in Boston. Just a moment earlier, it looked like a clean ride over to Cambridge. Suddenly here come the 8s!
DSC_3910BWu-LR.tif
• We were in Ft Tryon park on a beautiful May day. This gentleman was enjoying the sunshine and entertaining all who would listen. He was kind enough to allow me to take this shot.
_DSC2444-1BWu-LR.tif
• This is a small section of one of my favorite places to shoot. There was lots of snow over the winter so there was plenty of water. The slow shutter speed gave just enough blur to the water.
_DSC2916uBW-LR.tif
• Not quite a stairway to heaven. Climb these stairs to get to the highest point in Manhattan in Fort Tryon Park. This park is filled with history. You can see one of the plaques on the wall tot he right.
_DSC2980BWu-LR.tif
• On a very sunny day I looked to my right and saw this woman and her dog enjoying the warmth in Fort Tryon Park.
_DSC2984BW2-LR.tif
• I have no idea who these two are, and I hope that they didn't realize that I snapped this shot. Looking out over the Hudson River from the highest part of Manhattan on a beautiful spring day.
_DSC2986BWu-LR.tif
• These two ladies were deeply engrossed in conversation in Fort Tryon Park. The big hat on the lady to the right made this shot too tempting to pas up.
_DSC2989BWu-LR.tif
• Four people clearly enjoying themselves in the basket. I'm not sure how far they went or how high. Someday maybe I'll be able to do that!

I've done this image in both color and black and white. The differences are remarkable. My family and friends are evenly divided as to which they prefer. Which do you like better?
RidingInABalloon3234BW.tif
• I was very fortunate, on a beautiful spring day in New York, I happened to turn around and saw this couple walking arm in arm. It is one of my favorite images. This couple has clearly been together for a long time. If you look closely, they are even walking in step!
EnduringLove4500BWu-3.tif
• One of the old cemeteries in Shrewsbury, NJ. This section is behind one of the old churches. One nice thing about most cemeteries is that they truly are peaceful! Some of these headstones go back to colonial days.
DSC_3612_HDRBWu-LR.tif
• This little section of the cemetery caught my attention. The central monument lead me to believe that it was for a deceased member of the Marine Corps. When I took a closer look, I got a chuckle that the eagle seemed to be looking at the iron cross to its right!
DSC_3651_HDRBWu-LR.tif
• One of the things that makes older cemeteries interesting is the diversity of monuments. In earlier times, people seem to have spent much more time on the type of monument chosen for a loved one as well as the inscription. Apparently, the covering on the two pillars in the center have specific meaning. I confess I don't remember what it is!
DSC_3663_HDRBW-1u-LR.tif
• Every fall we get together with my sister in law and her husband to can tomatoes. We do it the pretty old fashioned way, but we do a lot of them. While one batch was cooking, I decided to grab a couple of shots because this looks like anything but what it is!
DSC_3414BWu-LR.tif
• This is perhaps the best known landmark in Gloucester, MA. It is a tribute to the centuries of fishermen who have sailed from that port.
FishermansMonument8266-3BBW.tif
• Amidst all the hustle and bustle of New York, there are always these little scenes of tranquility. In this case, a small bird sitting on a very wobbly fence.
BirdOnAFence0725BWu.tif
• Classic New York, playing basketball on a hoop without nets. I was walking by when I saw a few kids playing and got this shot. I'll leave it up to you, did it go in?
SchoolYardBasketball0786-2BWu.tif
• My how they've changed the crossing signs over the years. I was especially struck by the image of a person going one way and the animals in the window going the other
CrossTheStreet0703-2BWu.tif
• In a bus shelter at the start of the number 4 bus line. I love the diverse group of people, showing so many classic New York actions while waiting for the bus to arrive.
WaitingForTheBus0773BWu.tif
• One of the things I love shooting is interesting people. This gentleman was just walking down the street and fit the character of the neighborhood on Arthur Avenue, the Bronx, NY, so perfectly.
WalkingDownArthurAvenue1449BW2u.tif
• This is one of my favorite pictures. It was a beautiful sunny fall day in Gloucester, MA. As I turned around, I saw this woman enjoying a book. She is on a stone bench. I really love how she is using her book as a sun shield while she reads.
Reading8106BW2u.tif
• Two sphinxes on guard. While there was plenty of color in the background, these two come across much better in black and white. While very different from their more famous namesake in Egypt, they meet the definition of sphinxes.
Sphinxes2310BWu.tif
• The trains no longer stop here. The old station for Belle Mead, NJ is slowly falling apart. The most recent changes are the graffiti over so many surfaces.
BelleMeadStation_2187BWu.tif
• The north bound waiting room at the now abandoned Belle Mead railroad station. This small building is literally falling apart. The windows are boarded and the graffiti abounds.
NorthBoundWaitingRoom_2194BW.tif
• Part of the interior of the north bound waiting room in the abandoned Belle Mead station. One of the brick walls has already started collapsing. Yes some of the graffiti is harsh and angry, but it fits so well with the crumbling and destruction.
InsideTheWaitingRoom_2207BWu.tif
• A longer view of the north bound waiting room at the now abandoned Belle Mead station. You can see a circular fireplace on the floor along with all the decay and graffiti. Some of the graffiti uses very harsh language, but to me that fits with the rest of the image
InsideTheWaitingRoom_2235BWu.tif
• The remains of Dunseverick Castle in county Antrim, Northern Ireland. This is all that remains of a once significant structure. Just to the left is the Giants' Causeway. The black and white rendering adds to the appearance of aging and decay.
DunsverickCastle_2391BWu.tif
• These rocks are at the Giants Causeway in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. I don't know if they are a natural occurrence, but I really like how they look like some type of creature. In the bottom right is a bit of debris, just to complete the scene.

Taking this to black and white really changes everything!
StoneCreature_2482BWu-tif
• The Giant's Causeway rises out of the water like the start of a paved path from the north of Ireland headed to Scotland. The stones are natural basalt.
GiantsCauseway_2499BW-1u.tif
• An abandoned house outside of Sligo, County Sligo, Ireland. The configuration of the house and windows gives the impression that it has a face. Presenting this image in black and white gives it a very different feel.
AbandonedHouseSligo_2693BWu.tif
• We were driving along the coast road in Co Sligo, Ireland when we spotted this shipwreck. I don't know any more about this ship. This is my favorite rendering of this image. The black and white format adds a timeless feel and a touch of the heartbreak that this is how the ship ended up.
SligoDerelict_2744BW2u.tif
• This little rock pile is just across from the base of the Cliffs of Moher in County Clare, Ireland. When we were there, the winds were howling. You can see how rough the seas were. This little rock pile caught my interest as it resisted all that wind.
RocksInTheWInd_2834BWu-LR.tif
• This pier is in Doolan, County Clare, Ireland. At first sight, I chuckled at the sign. Seeing how rough the sea was, I quickly realized that when it's dark or there's a heavy fog, the end may not be so obvious!
EndOfPier_2851BW3u.tif
• Atop the Cliffs Of Moher in County Clare, Ireland is a farm! What amazed me was that this field is within 100 feet of the edge ofthe cliffs! I have no idea how old this equipment is or whether it is still used. I love how the black and white treatment creates a timeless feel for this image.
FarmEquipment_2942BW-5u.tif
• The Three Corners Pub in Brosna, County Kerry, Ireland. There is precious little else in Brosna other than a very pretty church. I was also amused at the cosmopolitan influence. They serve three brews, two Irish and one Dutch!
ThreeCornersPub_3199BWu-LR.tif
• In the heart of CastleIsland, County Kerry, Ireland is this building. I love the colors. On the top floor is the town's library which was originally a Carnegie Library. We have a family member who was the librarian there for many years. I really like how rendering this image in black and white totally changes it giving it more of an aged and timeless feel.
CastleIslandTownHall_3215BWu.tif
• St. Patrick's Cathedral sits In the heart of Dublin, Ireland. This covered archway connects the church to the other buildings that support it. It's wonderful to see how totally the very traditional aspects of this old city are merged with the modern.
StPatricksArch_3261BWu.tif
• As the song goes...In Dublin fair city, where the girls are so pretty, there lives a young lady named Molly Malone. This statue just sits on a street corner. The leprechaun and lad playing the pipes were fortunate additions. I wonder if she actually peddled her cockles and mussels on that street?
MollyMalone_3346BWu.tif
• I happened to look out the door and saw this scene. There are so many aspects that make this shot fun. The bare spots under the chairs, the contrast of summer type chairs covered in show, the snow falling, etc. Taking this shot to black and white really helps emphasize that it was taken in winter.
ChairsInTheSnow_1567-1BWu.tif
• It certainly was snowing that day. This chair was getting covered with a nicely detailed layer of snow, despite being nearly vertical. I've tried to bring out lots of details in this black and white image that has a touch of whimsey and fantasy.
SnowCoveredChaIrBack_1568BWu.tif
• A statue at the Loyola Jesuit Center in Morristown, NJ. This statue is cutting at the end of a field that is bordered by some woods. I was shooting in the early morning, just after the blue light. I was struck by large cross (X) behind her. The black and white treatment helps to bring out the details as well as the feel of the cold that morning.
NotreDameDeLaNeige_1673BW.tif
• This image was shot in the first (blue) light of day. I was struck by the warmth of the statue, the open welcoming arms, contrasted to the cold of the snow. It almost appears that her right hand is pointing to the bench, inviting you to come and visit with her. You can see a couple of trees in the background forming a crude cross in the background. I love how the black and white treatment simplifies the image to its basic components.
NotreDameDeLaNeige_1670BW.tif
• It was bitterly cold at Loyola Jesuit Center, Morristown, NJ when I came upon this new statue. I was very touched by the placement as well as the feeling of faith that it conveys. Black and white really brings out the depth of feeling that this image conveys.
PrayingInTheSnowBW1692BW.tif
• This statue at the Loyola Jesuit Center in Morristown, NJ was sitting in a very quiet spot where it conveys the quiet and spirituality of the center. On the day that I took this picture, it was very cold with a new layer of snow. I love how the black and white brings out the contrast of the snow and gives a chilling view.
PriestInTheSnowBW1694BW.tif
• This bench is at the Loyola Jesuit Center inMorristown, NJ. I was shooting at first light and was taken by the shapes, colors and textures of this scene. The black and white presentation retains much of the detail while bringing out a very winter feel.
BenchAtSunriseBW_1746BW.tif
• The late day shadows help to accent this peaceful scene at Duke Farms, Hillsborough, NJ. The tree is clearly old and grows in many directions including one branch that looks like it's sheltering the bench.
TreeAndBenchInTheSnow_1535BWu.tif
• I came upon this scene in the Arthur Avenue Retail Market, on Arthur Avenue in the Bronx, N.Y. I did a double take when I first saw this little scene. It does look a bit like Mr. Capone. I was equally amused by the tiki torch right ned to him!
AlCaponearthurAvenue_1428-BWu.tif
• Walking down Arthur Avenue in theBronx, NY I was taken by this store front. I suspect that I could have found the same scene fifty years ago, maybe the prices would have been different. I love the mix of reflections in the window with people showing through from the inside.
SeafoodOnArthurAvenue_1432-BW.tif
• Looking out onto Arthur Avenue, the Bronx, NY. Seeing all that olive oil, especially from Sicily, stuck me like a scene from Godfather 2. We did get some great food while there along with some fun pictures.
OliveOil_1434-BWu.tif
• I suspect that this view hasn't changed in over thirty years. The long view down the seawall just seems to keep going, but never changing. The black and white treatment helps to create the timeless feel.
TheBeachfrontAtCapeAnn_9025BW.tif
• I suspect that this view hasn't changed in over thirty years. The long view down the seawall just seems to keep going, but never changing. The sepia treatment helps to create an antique feel.

• We were having lunch along the docks on a beautiful day in Gloucester, MA. I happened to look up and see this fellow posted atop a nearby boat.
SeagullSittingWatch_7946BW-LR.tif
• This is an old manufacturing building in Gloucester, MA. I was looking out across the water and took quite some time to get the building framed in the dock pilings.
AnOldFactory_7965BW2.tif
• This is a wider view of the old Gloucester factory. The main focus remains framed by the pilings, while the building on the right adds some perspective
AnOldFactory_7965BW.tif
• I was shooting on the docks in Gloucester, MA when I saw the mast on one boat. I just thought it was an interesting thing to have there. I've also taken some liberties in the post processing!
Masthead_8069BW.tif
• This gull is heading down a long stretch of beach in Cape Ann, MA. I love how the stones and tracks lead off as well as how the bird is heading to a bit of discarded clothing without actually looking where it is going!
SeagullOnTheBeach_8932-BW.tif
• Some of the remains of a derelict pier in Gloucester, MA. You can see just the tops of the piling sticking out of the water.
OldPilings_8007BW2c.tif
• This is what's left from a pier in Gloucester, MA. I like how the rows of pilings align in several ways along with some very interesting reflections in the water. This black and white version really brings out some of those details.
RowsOfPilings_8090BW.tif
• One of the best known views in Boston, the sign in Kenmore Square. I've done several treatments on this in both color and black and white. I hope you find one you like.

• Mount Auburn Cemetery in Watertown, MA dates back to before the Civil War. While touring this beautiful park, I saw this marker. It is sad in that it commemorates the deaths of three children. I was taken by the beauty of the stone, the details that have survived for over 150 years and the message of hope and faith it projects.
